Fluor
Corporation (NYSE: FLR) has selected “Building a Clean Water Kiosk
for Safe Drinking Water in India,” benefiting Uthaan in Gurgaon, India,
as its 2016 Best-in-Class community improvement project. The project was
chosen from among 10 employee-led community improvement projects that
received funding from Fluor’s $100,000 Global
Community Project Fund earlier in 2016. The project will receive
$10,000 to supplement the original $10,000 grant.
Uthaan, a Gurgaon-based non-government organization that does charitable
work, created a clean water kiosk in India, which will be operated by
graduates of the Welfare Center for the Hearing and Speech Impaired
School. The project has the potential to benefit more than 200,000
people, as the kiosk is located at a major transportation hub where
passengers commute on a daily basis.
“I certainly would like to thank Fluor’s management and the project’s
core team for giving us the opportunity to work on such a noble
project and creating this drinking water kiosk, which is the first of
its kind in Gurgaon,” said Sanjay Kaushik, president of Uthaan. “I have
never seen volunteers give so much time and look at each and every
aspect of the project, be it technology selection, execution strategy,
landscaping or cleaning. They look for safety in everything and every
activity generally starts with a safety briefing and ends by ensuring
that safety is taken care in every step of planning and execution. I
really enjoy and appreciate that discipline and attitude of care and
concern.”
“The Global Community Project Fund helps unite Fluor employees around
the world, providing the opportunity to positively impact the lives of
people in the communities where we live and work,” said Mark
Landry, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for
Fluor. “Through the fund and other initiatives and partnerships, we
strive to leave a sustainable impact in our communities that addresses
critical basic human needs. On behalf of Fluor, I thank the nominating
employees, Fluor Cares volunteers and everyone involved who helped make
these projects possible.”
“The Uthaan project in Gurgaon, India stood out because it provides
solutions to two major concerns in the Gurgaon community: the need for
clean drinking water facilities at transit points for thousands of
commuters and the creation of job opportunities for the deaf and
non-verbal community,” said Torrence Robinson, Fluor’s senior director
of global community affairs and president of the Fluor Foundation.
Communities around the globe benefit from Fluor’s Global Community
Project Fund. Volunteers are essential to the success of the projects,
with over 500 employees volunteering more than 2,800 hours to bring the
10 projects to fruition. Details of each project, which span from Peru
to the Philippines, are provided on Fluor’s website.
One year after project completion, Fluor expects the 10 Global Community
Project Fund projects to directly result in:
-
143,000 meals provided to the hungry
-
9 community-serving facilities refurbished or rebuilt
-
2 acres of land restored and beautified
-
30 individuals provided with job skills training to further their
education and employment
-
85 students provided with science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM) awareness, training or enrichment
-
700 children with disabilities receiving life skills enrichment
-
280 trees and shrubs planted throughout communities
-
200,000+ lives positively impacted
In honor of the company’s 100-year anniversary celebration in 2012,
Fluor established the $100,000 Centennial Community Fund, now the Global
Community Project Fund. Beginning in February 2016, Fluor employees
nominated community improvement projects benefiting local charitable
organizations. Ten winners were selected through an online worldwide
public vote, with each receiving $10,000 from the $100,000 fund, as well
as Fluor volunteers to help execute their community projects.
