Fluor to construct new 16-mile rail system in the Washington Metropolitan Region
Fluor
Corporation (NYSE: FLR) announced today that its team, Purple Line
Transit Partners, comprised of Fluor Enterprises Inc., Meridiam
Infrastructure Purple Line, LLC, and Star America Purple Line, LLC, was
selected as the preferred proponent to design-build, finance, operate
and maintain the Purple Line project for the Maryland Department of
Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA).
Located in the Washington Metropolitan Region, the project includes 21
stations along a 16-mile alignment through Montgomery and Prince
George’s counties. Fluor plans to book its share of the contract value
later this year.
The Fluor-led design-build team, Purple Line Transit Constructors,
comprises Fluor Enterprises Inc., The Lane Construction Corporation,
Traylor Bros., Inc., and includes subcontractor Atkins North America,
Inc., as the lead designer. The Purple Line Transit Constructors team
will begin design and construction later this year with passenger
service scheduled for early 2022. Following the construction, Purple
Line Transit Operators, a Fluor-led team comprising Fluor Enterprises,
Inc., Alternate Concepts, Inc., and CAF USA, Inc., will provide 30 years
of operations and maintenance services.
The $2 billion Purple Line Light Rail Project will extend from Bethesda,
Maryland, in Montgomery County to New Carrollton, Maryland, in Prince
George’s County. This new line will provide connections to several
existing transit providers and improve mobility to major economic and
job centers, as well as the University of Maryland in College Park. The
project will support community revitalization and transit-oriented
development along the corridor.
“The selection of the Fluor team solidifies our industry-leading ability
to successfully manage complex public-private partnership (P3)
projects,” said Hans Dekker, president of Fluor’s infrastructure
business. “The Purple Line project will benefit from Fluor’s global
experience, including the only other transit P3 in the United States,
the Eagle P3 project in Denver, which is scheduled to begin passenger
service on the University of Colorado A Line this spring. We are proud
to enter into a long-term partnership with the state of Maryland and
will design, build, finance, operate and maintain this world-class
transit link using our proven integrated life-cycle approach and
experience.”
