Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) announced today that it has completed the
US$500 million infrastructure and plant upgrades on the Jwaneng Cut 8
expansion project, a part of the US$3 billion expansion program at
Debswana’s Jwaneng mine in Botswana. Fluor provided engineering,
procurement and construction management services for the mine, which is
the richest diamond mine by value in the world.
The expansion enables the removal of overburden to allow the mine to
access 91 million tonnes of ore that will yield around 102 million
carats of diamonds and extends the life of the mine to 2025.
“Fluor has set the highest standard of performance commensurate with
their world class position,” said Balisi Bonyongo, General Manager of
the Jwaneng Mine.
“Executing a project inside an operational mine is a challenging task
and we are proud to complete the project with minimal disruption and
impact to production,” said Matthew Cobbett, Fluor’s executive general
manager for its Mining & Metals business line. “The project team should
be commended for its remarkable achievements.”
This milestone was celebrated during the project completion ceremony
held in Jwaneng and was attended by executive and senior management from
Debswana Diamond Company, Fluor and other construction contractors.
As part of the project, Fluor, Debswana and its contractors undertook
numerous sustainability initiatives that have directly benefited the
town of Jwaneng and its surrounding communities.
Fluor continues to support Debswana and is currently undertaking a
pre-feasibility study for a new treatment plant at Letlhakane Diamond
Mine, north of Botswana’s capital, Gaborone.
