Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) was awarded the Freedom to Compete Award
by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Fluor was recognized for its Mentoring Circles Program at its Houston
office where a diverse group of employees is given exposure to members
of Fluor's senior leadership in a team-based setting that allows for
mentoring, information sharing, informal conversations and learning
across the circle. This process is intended to further support two-way
and collaborative conversations throughout the company.
"Our mentoring program has proven to be a very effective way to engage
our employees," said Steve Gilbert, senior vice president of Human
Resources and Corporate Administration. "This program grew from a few
test groups and has been embraced by Fluor offices, leaders and
employees around the globe. I am proud of our employees, and the
recognition bestowed by EEOC on Fluor."
The objectives of Fluor's Mentoring Circles Program are to provide
participants with a heightened awareness of the company; varied
perspectives through both peer and senior leadership mentoring and an
expanded network of colleagues.
In Fluor's Houston office, mentoring circles are led by senior
executives. Today, there are 24 active mentoring circles in Houston with
210 members.
"Houston clearly sees the value in this program," said Karen Vari,
Fluor's global leader for diversity and inclusion. "They recognized its
potential early on, leading to its widespread impact in that office."
Fluor was among seven employers recognized during an award ceremony June
14 at EEOC's Washington, D.C., headquarters.
"The Freedom to Compete Award honors organizational leaders whose
extraordinary efforts embody a key tenet of the Commission's goals: to
ensure that all individuals have the freedom to compete and advance in
the workplace on a level playing field. We congratulate Fluor
Corporation and the other award winners, and look forward to partnering
with them to ensure equal opportunities for all employees," said EEOC
Chair Cari M. Dominguez. "Ultimately, the Freedom to Compete Award is
about setting examples and teaching. The best way to further the equal
employment opportunity mission is to learn from one another."
The Freedom to Compete Initiative, launched by Chair Cari M. Dominguez
in 2002, advances the EEOC's mission to prevent and eradicate employment
discrimination. Freedom to Compete is designed to build a web of
partnerships, liaisons and alliances that will serve to educate
America's work force, deter potential discrimination and promote
compliance and sound employment practices. It is an outreach, education
and coalition-building strategy designed to complement the agency's
enforcement and litigation programs.
The EEOC is the federal government agency responsible for enforcing the
nation's anti-discrimination laws in the workplace. Further information
on the EEOC and on the Freedom to Compete Award is available online at www.eeoc.gov.
