Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) today announced that its project manager
Tulanda D. Brown has earned a 2006 Black Engineer of the Year Award.
Brown was presented with the Professional Achievement in Industry award
at the 20th Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards ceremony held on
Saturday, February 18.
Brown is a professional nuclear and systems safety engineer with more
than 15 years of experience at various Department of Energy (DOE)
facilities. She is a published subject matter expert in nuclear safety
regulation development and implementation, as well as in ensuring
environmental, safety and health controls for facilities undergoing
decontamination, decommissioning and environmental restoration.
Prior to assuming her new position as a Fluor project manager at the
DOE's Hanford site, where she is responsible for the remediation of more
than 148 waste sites, Brown served as the company's Safety and Health
manager at the Fernald closure project, where she was responsible for
safety and health initiatives and oversight of over 1,200 personnel
working on four major projects.
Brown recently developed an innovative approach to DOE-approved safety
documentation that played an instrumental role in initiating critical
projects at Fernald. The approach, named the Nuclear Health and Safety
Plan (N-HASP), now is supported by both the DOE and the Defense Nuclear
Facilities Safety Board as a new standard for remedial activity and site
closure of former DOE nuclear facilities.
"Tulanda has made significant accomplishments both as a federal employee
for the DOE and as a Fluor employee, and we congratulate her on her
selection for this prestigious award," said Jamie Jameson, a vice
president within the Fluor Government Group. "We are proud to have
Tulanda help us serve our clients with a level of expertise and
diversity that leads the industry."
Active in a variety of civic and professional organizations, Brown has
served as a chair of the Professional Women in American Nuclear Society
Committee and the Fluor Fernald Diversity Awareness Board. She is a
member of the National Management Association, Southwest Chapter of
Blacks in Government and the Urban League Young Professionals. She also
participates in various community service activities through the Fluor
Foundation, including volunteer work at a shelter for young women.
Brown is the recipient of the YMCA Black Achiever Award and has earned
eight DOE Special Acts Awards, which are presented to individuals who
have achieved outstanding results in a particular area or task that has
DOE office-wide or agency-wide implications.
Brown earned a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering from the
University of Cincinnati and is pursuing a MBA from the University of
Findlay.
