Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) today announced that it has been
contracted to provide maintenance services at Olympic Dam Operations
with its joint venture partners Monadelphous Engineering Associates Pty.
Ltd. and Broadspectrum Australia Pty. Ltd.
Olympic Dam, a business unit of WMC Resources, is a large-scale mining
and refining operation located in South Australia at one of the world's
largest copper and uranium resources. The contract value to Fluor was
not disclosed and was booked in the company's second quarter. The
three-year contract includes a three-year extension option.
The Monadelphous Broadspectrum Fluor joint venture will provide
maintenance services support at Olympic Dam, including planning,
execution and supervision of maintenance work orders and management of
contracted services.
"WMC at Olympic Dam Operations expects that the joint venture will
participate in and, where necessary, lead the way in the application of
continuous improvement, particularly in the areas of health,
environment, safety and community as well as maintenance practices. We
are also looking forward to being able to tap into the joint venture's
knowledge and experience network. There are opportunities for the joint
venture to share experiences from their colleagues on other operating
sites with us at Olympic Dam and to share some of their experiences here
with other sites," said Brett McLeod, WMC's manager, engineering,
Olympic Dam Operations.
"This is an important award for Fluor and our Australian operations &
maintenance group," said Kirk Grimes, Fluor's group president of Global
Services. "We look forward to implementing this innovative
pay-for-performance contract designed to bring value to WMC's bottom
line and help drive cultural change onsite."
Olympic Dam is located in Roxby Downs, South Australia, and produces
high quality refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. The mine
has the sixth largest known copper and the largest uranium ore body in
the world.
The massive ore body was discovered by WMC in 1975 and went into
production in 1988. The operation now comprises a fully integrated
