The new United States embassy complex in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
(UAE), completed in March 2004, was chosen for its use and efficacy of
design- build as a project delivery method. Designed to express the
strong, deep and lasting relations between the UAE and the United
States, the facility features an innovative futuristic design, marked by
the striking angular shape and the use of unusual building materials.
The design reflects the favored style of architecture in Abu Dhabi:
bold, abstract and ultramodern that contrasts sharply, yet effectively,
with the surrounding desert landscape. The vibrant design remains
consistent with the standard for architectural innovation in the UAE.
"We are very proud of this recognition. Our project delivery team did an
outstanding job! Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum was an excellent design
partner, and the Overseas Buildings Operations office of the Department
of State was an involved, cooperative and committed owner, working with
us as a partner. It was most definitely a team effort as exemplified in
the fact that we, HOK and OBO were all recognized as winners for this
award," said Mike Gwyn, head of J.A. Jones International.
