Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) today announced that it has been awarded a
contract by the city of Charlotte, N.C., to renovate the Charlotte
Convention Center to accommodate trolley and light rail service.
Ranking among the nation's 30 largest convention facilities, the
Charlotte center provides 850,000 square feet of enclosed space and
encompasses four city blocks. Fluor will provide construction management
and other services related to construction of a "through-building"
corridor for a vintage trolley and light rail service, while keeping the
center open for operations.
To reduce vibration transmission from the rails to the surrounding
facility, the project will mount the rails on a floating, concrete
isolation slab, supported by large springs. Used commonly in Europe,
this technology has seen relatively limited use in the United States.
Construction is under way with completion scheduled by summer 2003.
Fluor is executing the project out of its Greenville, S.C., office.
"Fluor constructed the original convention center in the mid-90s, and
we're pleased to have been selected to participate in the next phase of
its development," said Dwayne Wilson, a president within Fluor's
Industrial & Infrastructure group.
