Fluor Corporation today announced that Fluor Alaska Inc. has been
awarded a contract to provide construction services for the U.S.
Ground-Based Midcourse Missile Defense (GMD) test bed facilities. The
three-year contract has a potential value of up to $325 million, $160
million of which will be booked in the current fiscal quarter.
Awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the contract calls
for the construction of GMD test bed facilities that will be used to
validate the GMD operational concept in Fort Greely, Alaska, and at
Eareckson Air Force Station on Shemya Island, Alaska. Fluor will execute
the project out of its Alaska office, with management support from its
Government Services group, Fluor Federal Services, in Richland,
Washington.
"We are proud to have been awarded this contract to support America's
defense system, given its national and international importance,
security requirements, tight schedule and difficult environment," said
Fluor's Ron Peterson, group executive of Government Services. "Along
with the USACE, we are committed to working with the small businesses
and Alaskan residents to make this project successful. Fluor is
recognized as a leader in the engineering and construction industry, and
this contract award broadens our participation in the federal services
marketplace, which is a strategic priority of ours and fits the spectrum
of services we wish to provide the Department of Defense."
Fluor Alaska, Inc. and its subcontractors will employ 350 to 400 workers
at the high point of the Fort Greely construction activity. The
government's intent is to provide a maximum opportunity for Alaskan
firms and qualified Alaskan workers to be employed in this construction
project.
The GMD is a critical element of the U.S.' Ballistic Missile Defense
System. It is being developed to defend the entire United States during
the midcourse segment of a hostile missile's attack. The test bed
facilities that will be constructed at Fort Greely and Shemya
installations will allow validation of potential activities associated
with the GMD operational concept by testing the interoperability of the
GMD components in a realistic environment. These test bed facilities
also will assist in the validation of the GMD operational concept by
validating activities, such as construction techniques, operational
procedures, installation, checkout, assembly and maintenance. The GMD
test facility will cover about 260 acres at Fort Greely and a small area
at Eareckson AFS.
