Nearly 2,000 Underprivileged Children Benefit from Fluor's First North American Volunteer Project

November 9, 2001

Fluor Corporation's Community Involvement Team today announced better-than-expected results of "Backpack Basics," the first-ever volunteer project simultaneously encompassing all of Fluor's offices in North America.

Through "Backpack Basics," Fluor employees and their families donated backpacks and school supplies to underprivileged children for the upcoming school year. Each of the company's regional offices partnered with a local non-profit agency to distribute the backpacks and supplies.

Fluor donated 1,500 backpacks, and employees throughout the United States and Canada were asked to donate supplies to fill the bags. More than 250 employees worked nearly 1,000 hours to ready the bags for distribution in August. Just weeks before the start of a new school year 1,783, backpacks stuffed with new school supplies were delivered to needy students eager to learn. In addition, extra supplies and cash donations were distributed to select schools.

"This program was such a rewarding success for the students who will, no doubt, benefit from the giving spirit of our North American employees," said J. Robert Fluor II, vice president of Corporate and Public Affairs. "We look forward to expanding the project next year, involving all of Fluor's offices globally."

Fluor, as a company and network of employees, has a long tradition of community involvement and searching out creative ways to help others. The Fluor Community Involvement Team (FCIT) was formed in 1976. Since then, Fluor employees globally have donated thousands of hours a year to service projects within their communities.
