Fluor Daniel, the engineering and construction unit of Fluor Corporation
(NYSE: FLR), and two equity partners have been given final approval by
the State of Utah to proceed with design and construction of the Legacy
Parkway, a $330 million limited-access highway designed to improve
automobile traffic patterns in the greater Salt Lake City area.
Although initial engineering and planning for the project began last
January, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) issued a “notice
to proceed” for construction to Fluor Ames Kraemer LLC on July 2, 2001.
Fluor Ames Kraemer LLC was formed to bid on and build the roadway.
Fluor, as overall managing partner, is working closely in an integrated
team with partners Ames Construction Inc. of Burnsville, Minnesota and
Edward Kraemer & Sons Inc. of Plain, Wisconsin.
Running from Interstate 215 in Salt Lake County, just north of Salt Lake
International Airport, to Interstate 15/State Route 89 in Davis County,
plans call for the 14-mile UDOT project to be built in phases over the
next 42 months.
Legacy Parkway will carry four lanes (two in each direction) of traffic,
and will have 31 bridges and two major freeway-to-freeway interchanges.
One major interchange will be at Interstate 15/State Route 89 and the
other will be at Interstate 215.
"Together with UDOT, it is our overriding objective to provide the
citizens of the Salt Lake area with a transportation facility built in
an environmentally sensitive manner and in the shortest amount of time
possible," said Fluor's Steve Dobbs, president, Transportation Business
Unit. "Our proposal, which we are now putting into action, is based on
our experience of working with clients throughout the world to address
pressing transportation needs in new ways."
